Full Version: What's the rationale for closing threads which have people OT-ing about scalpers?

Hey, while I'm on your side, I don't see any logical reason to close threads which have people OT-ing. rubchin.gif

I mean sure, post mod them or ban them or whatever, but closing the thread? How does that actually help? Care to enlighten me anyone? laugh.gif
Demonight
it helps by reducing the instigation of mob mentality against scalpers
Sparkplug
The rationale?

Very simple. When a thread is closed, everyone is curious as to why its closed and flock into the thread to check the last few posts. The warning post (which is also the last post) then serves as a reminder which has been read by most members. More effective than if i had simply posted a gentle reminder and left the thread opened. Leaving the thread closed for a few days ensures even the thickest skulls get the message. If not, there's always other ways to make these people wake up.

P.S. Oh, and i can always reopen the thread later.
Raul
I am not against the moderating of members who did not follow the TOC. Give them warning, ban them for a week and etc is fine by me if their actions justify doing so. But to make other forumers left out because of others' sin? I don't think making forumers blame the few culprit who din follow TOC will work here. Considering TF Movie toy thread is still in the hype, and with the thread closed, won't people dying to see what is happening with the toy infor turn elsewhere? Just a thought
Sparkplug
Didn't i just say the thread will be reopened after a period of time?

I don't see it as a sin, more like ignorance due to refusal to look before posting. I think a good term for these black sheep members will be "Trigger-happy posters". That warning about not going OT, especially about scalpers, has been running about on posts by other members for a few months. A FEW MONTHS. Any effect? No. Do i want to moderate these people who refuse to read before posting, one at a time without giving due warning to the rest of the members who do not know what is going on? No (Tried and failed). The best thing will be for the thread to be closed for a few days. If the hype is still there, people will go in and see why its closed. Warning seen. Mission accomplished? YES. Without moderating more people.
Raul
Ok, got you. Was typing the msg when you just posted yours. Thanks for explaining. Tough job moding the forum.
Goenitz
well no doubt modding is tough and its even tougher when u are on voluntary work tongue.gif

anyway i find the restrictions here quite abit too much for moi personal taste tongue.gif

so instead of actively posting i have decided to read quietly when i am free laugh.gif

cant actually expect every forum to have the same moderations rules smile.gif

bearing this in mind, SGC is really generic, concerns about young childrens reading the forum is one of our utmost priorities. hence strict rules are here for a reason.

I totally agree and hope that the strict rules apply to all, regardless members or mods, and across the threads and boards. i.e. no double standards.

is there anything that u would like to bring up specifically at all?

No. I was genuinely supportin what you said. What I added on was just a generic remark. Besides you and I have thrashed it out quite sometime ago at the Macross thread. So there are no hard feelings.

Prehaps the way I put it was incorrect and misleadin..

To tell you guys the truth, I think the mods here are strict, maybe a little too strict. I have seen other forums with members who go off-topic and sometimes spam but the mods don't seem to be that strict. They just give a few warnings and that's about it but they do not close threads. Maybe you could try ban members from a specific thread if they go OT or create problems instead of closing threads. Mods could also give a pm to newbies evrytime they join sgcollect. Maybe in the pm, say something like don't go OT, read TOS section, etc. Mods can also have a few senior members to help out. These are just my suggestions.I know it is hard to be a mod but if you could try to change a few things, things might go out well.

Firstly, dont' quote other forums, every forum has it own unique sets of rules and regulations that are essential to the proper maintainenance of the forum.

Frankly, do u have any idea how many so called "newbies" are there?

this is juz one category, there's still spammers, trolls, partime sellers, retailers, multiple user nicknames and members who juz spam in order to sell their stuffs. believe me, u wouldn't be able to do it in one day.

Members ARE supposed to read the TOS before use.

Some of u ARE already doing it and we sincerely appreciate it. it makes our jobs that much easier

Indeed i did challenge the system here when i first came laugh.gif

But rules are rules and i followed them in the end. closedeyes.gif

I use at least 5 forums actively and each have their own levels of moderation and rules.

And yes, SGC is the most strict of them all, but i think it's good too. We're a toy collecting forum, not EDMW.
You have no idea how much i can spam in EDMW with mindless topics.

Different forums serves different functions.

I was a mod in another forum which was too lax. Obviously SGC methods were not useful there. It's so lax, everyone is lax, it's for people of all ages yet vulgarities are blatantly used, spam and all crap.
I got assaulted and have a broken nose because of that. All for trying to help make his forum shine out?
Screw it.

Just go with the flow in the forum.

Well i participate actively in HWC of the same forum as EDMW tongue.gif

well it is just that it is different here and in there.

Ppl there are paid to work and they require high hits to get more sponsorship and etc

smile.gif i would say here is a more for stricter and lower profile forum for those who are truly interested in collecting

IMO, there is nothing wrong in challenging if you think you are right, I am sure the mods/ other members will be mature enough to realise their mistakes and admit it. Of course if you are in the wrong then realise and admit as well.

Positive challenging can improve a forum as utimately no one is perfect, as long as the exchange of views do not involve names-calling, vulgarities or become personal.

Dear silverag,

we've opened up a classifieds section for members as an alternative to our well used Junkyard. The link is this URL
http://www.sgcollect.com/index.php?option=...h&Itemid=38

This is to gauge response for this service. Some things to take note
1) each classifieds has a 14 day visibility limit.
2) You can edit your thread within that 14 days
3) All members are allowed to use it (does not apply for Non-business entities)
4) There is no minimum forum posts to be able to post classifieds
5) All posts although they're not vetted by moderators, must comply to our Terms of Service.

If you have recommendations on how to improve this or to increase the categories, please advice us via email to prodimus@sgcollect.com or feedback to us via the feedback forums at http://www.sgcollect.com/forum/index.php?showforum=3

Lastly we would like to thank every member for making SGCollect.com the success that it is in the collectible community.

Sincerely

SGCollect.com

interesting..didn't know about this.

we'll look into it
Raul
That is definitly strange. Never receive any spam from sgcollect? Anyone else?
SiLVeR
i dont know.. i tink it's the 30+ emails already. and its still saying the same thing.. =(

e3lipse
I do get it too

I believe we checked some checkbox somewhere, but it doesn't bother me, besides, facebook and friendster spam my email up more than anything else.

Who knows, a SGC email could lead to a bargain rock.gif
Prodimus
hmmm 30 spams.. we'd check it out. We'd normally just send ONE mail out via our bulk mailer thats it.

the only way a person can get so many is of course registered multiple nicks using same email.. ?

You can only post on a thread that has been created until you have 10 posts. then you can start your own post. I believe that is the main reason. Alternatively you've not rectified your ID with the server - i.e you're still under "TEMP"

Can you just reply to one of the posts in the standard forums..might be because you've been lurking too long and have not even posted a reply.
